To learn new things, one must build on already existing knowledge. This implies that globally we need to be deliberate to help our children see the relationship of the science knowledge they learn in school with everyday applications. Due to the abstract nature of science concepts, there is a need for institutions, Science centers and Museums that go the extra mile to make science practical and fun. This is exactly what The Discovery Centre in Kenya does.
At The Discovery Centre, we simplify the communication of science by making it exciting and interactive. This ensures that the children understand the concepts fully and that they are inspired to develop an interest in science.
This is achieved by providing Science presentations and shows, hands-on Science investigations, Science Competitions, Science Exhibitions, field trips, and organizing Science driven events such as science days/weeks/fairs as well as our Coding Club. Our Coding Club offers children as early as 6 years old to learn how to code. We also host Science Clubs in schools where we discuss what the students have learned after a science lesson.
When children join our Science Club, they discover that Science is not only about doing science experiments or about solving mathematical problems. It is also about constructing gears, levers, or the Newton’s Cradle, children creating their games and applications and making their balloon-powered toy cars. It’s all about hands-on experience. It is also figuring out the concept of food science and the human body, Interest, and engagement in science can be increased when we offer practical science activities based on a child’s interests.
Our instructors find something they are interested in and are an example to the children. They make learning intentional and focused.
In our digital era where technology is advancing by the minute, programmers, developers or people who have the skills to face future technological challenges and a rise in STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) jobs will be in high demand. With our Coding Club, coding becomes a basic literacy skill, just like reading, writing, and math, necessary to be able to fit in a competitive world and become better in understanding the technological world we live in.
